POSTPARTUM (4th TRIMESTER CARE)
Let’s Bring the Focus Back to You, Momma
Did You Know?
Most women in the United States must independently navigate the postpartum period until their traditional postpartum visit at 4–6 weeks. This is often the most challenging time for new mothers.
More than half of pregnancy-related complications occur after delivery, highlighting the critical need for early postpartum care.
The first three months postpartum, also known as the 4th trimester, is a period of profound emotional, physical, and social transformation called “matrescence.” It’s a time when many new moms struggle with identity shifts, overwhelming emotions, and physical recovery.
Up to 40% of women skip their postpartum visit due to the challenges of early motherhood, leaving many without the support they need.
Dr. Iris founded Luminé Wellness after recognizing the lack of comprehensive postpartum care in traditional medicine. She witnessed countless new mothers struggling to recover physically, emotionally, and mentally, without adequate support or resources. With her expertise in Osteopathic Medicine and a holistic approach, Dr. Iris is dedicated to making sure you—the mother—are at the center of your postpartum care.
The Forgotten Transition: What is the 4th Trimester?
The 4th trimester refers to the critical first three months postpartum, a time of profound change as you transition into motherhood. This period, known as “matrescence,” mirrors the emotional and physical transformations of adolescence. Yet, unlike pregnancy, this stage often lacks the care and attention new moms desperately need.
During pregnancy, you likely had 15–17 prenatal visits with your OB, friends and family checking in on you, and even strangers offering their seats to you. But after giving birth, the attention shifts entirely to your baby. Once you’re discharged from the hospital, you’re told, “Good luck! See you in 4–6 weeks.” Meanwhile, these early weeks can be some of the most challenging of your life.
The Challenges of Postpartum: What Society Doesn’t Tell You
In today’s society, motherhood often comes with immense pressure to be “perfect.” Social media glamorizes the postpartum period, leaving many new moms feeling isolated and inadequate. Yet, it’s natural to experience a wide range of emotions—joy, nostalgia, sadness, and frustration—as you navigate this transition. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and it doesn’t mean you’re failing.
However, it’s important to distinguish between normal postpartum emotions and postpartum depression. Persistent sadness, anger, or anxiety lasting more than two weeks may signal the need for professional support. At Luminé Wellness, we’re here to help you differentiate and address these challenges.

Why Early Care Matters
Did you know that more than half of pregnancy-related complications occur postpartum? And yet, most women don’t receive medical attention until their 6-week follow-up appointment. At Luminé Wellness, we bridge this gap, providing care when you need it most.
“Dr. Iris is amazing! She took the time to explain everything she was doing and showed me some exercises I can do at home. I felt so relaxed after my appointment. Definitely recommend!!!”
Understanding Matrescence: It’s Not Just Postpartum Depression
Matrescence is a natural part of becoming a mother. It’s the tug-of-war between your old self and your new identity. You might feel nostalgia for your pre-baby life, irritation, or even boredom. These emotions don’t make you a bad mom; they make you human. Remember, you don’t have to be perfect—just “good enough” is enough for your baby.
Common Postpartum Conditions We Treat
Many new moms face physical discomfort or pain that can hinder their quality of life. We specialize in treating:

Pelvic floor issues such as urinary incontinence or dyspareunia
